Freshly Made Sketches #63

Happy Wednesday!  Freshly Made Sketches has a new sketch for you today!  Rita Wright designed this sketch and what a great sketch it is!  I came up with a card right away and set it aside just waiting for it to be published.  But then something about it kept picking away at me; I wasn't completely satisfied with it.  It was too, too plain.  I finally took it apart, added some patterned paper, used an embossing folder, added some ribbon and a jewel here and there and .. voila!

Hmm .. did I go overboard?  Maybe, but it's so much better than the original.  Here is Rita's sketch:

Be Merry & Bright

Today's post is my card for the November Waltzingmouse Christmas Card Challenge.  I've done a good job keeping up with this challenge throughout the year.  Really, it's only once a month and some of my favorite Christmas stamps are Waltzingmouse, so it was actually pretty easy for me.

The challenge this month was to make a card using a light source.  I didn't have much in the way of candles or lanterns and such, so I decided to create a string of lights.  I used a circle image from one of the stamp sets; a solid circle with a starburst.  I used silver embossing powder to create pretty shiny balls and then colored the starbursts with copics.  I added jewels for sparkle and .. voila!  I had strings of pretty Christmas lights.

Happy Birthday

Today I have a birthday card I made for a friend at work.  She wanted a card for a friend who likes to travel.  I decided to include "Happy Birthday" in different languages.  So I surfed the web and found a few interesting ones:

I hope I spelled them all correctly.  There is a little surprise one in there.  It's Klingon - can you find it?  And yes, I love Star Trek - I used to watch the original Star Trek episodes on TV when I was young.

Thanks for stopping by!  Have a great day!

Happy Holidays

If you celebrate it, I hope you had a wonderful Thanksgiving yesterday!  I had a nice quiet day with turkey and lots of time for crafting.  Which is good because I have a craft fair to get ready for as well as a few other projects.

I made these cards for the ladies in my golf club.  Our holiday lunch is coming up soon.  The green and red polka dot paper is perfect for adding a holiday touch to these cards.

I used A Muse cardstock - Sugar solid and Cherry and Grass petite polka dot.  This cardstock is a lighter weight than I have been used to using so I have tended to be heavy handed with it, scoring it hard multiple times.  It is also a white core paper.  In doing this, I have been causing the paper to crack when folding it, very annoying with colored cardstock.  I learned some tips to avoid this cracking and I used them with these cards.  Every single one folded perfectly with no cracking!  Here is what I did:

Score the paper GENTLY and only once, color side up.  Then fold the wrong way, color sides in, white on the outside, almost all the way.  Then fold the right way, using a bone folder to get a crisp fold.

I am thrilled to have finally mastered the art of no cracking because I really like the A Muse cardstock.

Freshly Made Sketches #62

Happy Wednesday!  Wow!  Is this year going by fast or what?!  It's already Thanksgiving (tomorrow) and I can feel Christmas breathing down my neck already.  The new sketch at Freshly Made Sketches this week comes from Jen Mitchell, and it's a very versatile one!

Today I am stepping back from holiday projects and posting a birthday card.  Lately I've been going through all my patterned paper and trying to whittle it down.  It's so hard for me.  I really have been neglecting it lately.  And when I saw Jen's sketch, I thought it was perfect for patterned paper.  I pulled out a new paper pad I got recently and made this:

And this is the awesome sketch from Jen:

Freshly Made Sketches #61

Happy Wednesday!  Time for a new sketch at Freshly Made Sketches!  This week's sketch is brought to you by Jennifer Timko.  I have to say that this sketch threw me for a loop; I couldn't think of a thing to do with it.  Then, while I was working on another project using the Peaceful Pinecones stamp and die set from Papertrey Ink, a lightbulb turned on and this what I made:

I like the cozy feel of the card.  It's makes me want to throw a log into the fireplace.  And I just might do that now that our weather here in Northern California has turned cold.  I'm loving it!  Our fall colors are in full bloom.  And, boy oh boy, that Peaceful Pinecones set is a fun one!  Wouldn't it look awesome with some glitter added to the pinecone?  I might just go back and add some.

Glitter Tags

It's Holiday Craft Fair time!  Every year in early December we have a craft fair where I work.  One of my favorite items to make and sell are tags.  This is the second batch of tags I've made so far.  I used the Bo Bunny Mistletoe paper collection, my Holiday Tag stamps from Papertrey Ink and some glitter paper to make these:

I like that they are so colorful.  I made 3 of each of these.

So this weekend I will pull out my box of leftovers from last year's craft fair and see what I need to replenish.  And think of something different to add.

Thanks for stopping by!  Have a great day!

Holiday Card Workshop - Day 6 - Card 2

I have a second card using inking techniques from the Day 6 Holiday Card Workshop class.  I should have been working on a Day 7 card, but I was engrossed in watching the election results and just couldn't think about what to make with reverse stamps (the Day 7 techniques).  I needed to do something simple and this came to mind quickly and was pretty quick to make:

I like the clean and simple look.  Using a die, I cut the word "merry" out of a white panel and popped it up for a white card base on which I had masked and inked with Tim Holtz Distress Inks and a blending tool.  I added a stamped holly and berries image to add a little extra touch.

Freshly Made Sketches #60

Happy Wednesday!  My favorite day of the week!  Time for a new sketch from Freshly Made Sketches!  I've been itching to use my Polar Pete stamp from Taylored Expressions and the new sketch this week from Tui Nathan was just perfect for it!  Because of the size of stamp, I needed to switch it up to a square card.  This is what I came up with:

Isn't Polar Pete so cute sitting there on the iceberg?  I also used a couple of new dies I recently got from Taylored Expressions - the Snowflake Border die and the Make a Snowflake die set (6 snowflakes in the set).  I cut the snowflakes out of some white glitter paper I had from DCWV.  If you click on the photo to enlarge it, you can see the glitter paper better.  It looks so pretty in real life.  I made two of these Polar Pete cards for my stash.

And here is the awesome sketch from Tui.  Can't you just see all the possibilities?!

Holiday Card Workshop - Day 6 - Card 1

Day 6 class is about inking techniques.  I really, really liked the stained class technique but I don't have all the materials to do it.  But I will get them and give it a try later.  So I decided to try the other inking technique which involves inking up a card panel with Tim Holtz Distress Inks and then misting a background stamp with water and stamping on the inked card panel.  I changed it a little - I used Mister Huey's Calico Shine mist instead of water on the background stamp.

I never thought of inking up paper by rubbing a whole ink pad on it, but I tried that here and I really like it.  It was really fast; I just went in after with a blending tool and blended out the harsh line between colors.  Easy peasy.

For Our Blessings

Today I have a card that I designed for a mini stamp camp that I am holding where I work.  I hold these camps during lunch hour so I need to keep the cards simple and have all the pieces precut so it's all stamping and building the card.

I love patterned papers and I really like piecing them together like I did here on the banner.  One of my favorite die sets right now are the Fishtail Flag banner dies from My Favorite Things.

Happy Birthday Card and Bookmark Duos

Today I have a couple of birthday cards and bookmarks that I made for my nieces (twins).

I recently got the Fair Skies collection from Farm House Paper Company.  This is a beautiful collection of papers and when I saw the papers with the hot air balloons on them, I had to use them.  You see, my nieces live in Albuquerque and there is a huge hot air balloon festival there every October.  There are so many awesome papers in this collection that it was easy to use a couple of older MFT sketches to show them off.

Now I've had the Bookmark stamp set and dies from My Favorite Things for a while now and I finally decided that it was time to ink it up and make some bookmarks.  It was really fun; I don't know what I was waiting for.  I am definitely going to make a few for my Holiday Craft Fair stash.

Thanks for stopping by!  Have a great day!

Holiday Card Workshop - Day 5 - Card 1

Day 5 was all about stamp and die combos.  One of the lessons was about Perfect Pearls resist and die cutting.  I have never used this technique before but I had some Perfect Pearls mist spray that I bought a while ago but never used.  So I thought I'd give it a try:

Wow!  I love this technique!  I used the Perfect Pearls resist technique on the ornaments.  Then after stamping the background panel I sprayed it with the Perfect Pearls mist.  It's really hard to tell from the photo but this card really shines.  And it was so easy, I made three of them.

Thanks for stopping by!  Have a great day!

Holiday Card Workshop - Day 4 - Card 1

Today's class was all about outline stamps and techniques for coloring them in.  I started looking through my stamps trying to decide what to do.  I wasn't really in the mood to use my Copics so I decided to go with a simple masking technique.  That morphed into this:

I cut the large poinsettia flower out of white panel and at the same time a piece of masking paper.  I then adhered the masking paper to the card base and sponged on Festive Berries Distress Ink.  Then I stamped over it with a music background stamp inked with Scarlet Jewel dye ink from Papertrey Ink.  When I removed the masking paper, there was a pretty poinsettia on the card base.  I thought about adding a sentiment and calling it a day, but at that point I just couldn't stop.  I really like it; I think it's my favorite so far.

Thanks for stopping by!  Have a great day!
